Puerto Plata, an important city on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, is known for its rich history, beautiful beaches and tourist attractions such as the Fortaleza San Felipe and the cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres. Founded in 1502, the city played an important role in trade between the New World and Europe. Today, tourism is the main economic sector, supported by numerous resorts, the Gregorio Luperón International Airport and the important commercial port. The city offers a vibrant culture with musical styles such as merengue and bachata as well as colorful festivals such as the annual carnival. Popular nearby beaches include Playa Dorada, Sosúa and Cabarete, known for their natural beauty and water sports.

The only cable car in the Caribbean leads up to Mount Isabel de Torres, which offers a breathtaking view of the city and the surrounding area. There is also a statue of Christ on the summit, similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro.
